About

Founder and Creator

PlayTheGroove was developed by Richard J. Frank, a professional musician and instructional designer specializing in contemporary ensemble design. He is a bassist, producer, innovator, and creative catalyst with dual Master’s degrees.

He is redefining music education through Unison-Based Content (UBC)—an inclusive unison-melody and groove-based approach for “jazzy” ensembles—and curating teacher-ready materials through PlayTheGroove.com.
Blending research, modern educational discoveries, the National Core Arts Standards, and real-world practice, his work focuses on building and sustaining student agency, motivation, participation, and creative development in today’s music classrooms.

Focus

This work centers on Unison-Based Content (UBC) to support flexible, student-centered, and inclusive ensemble models.
